Art in Sweden
In recent years, we have taken the opportunity to see a lot of art around Sweden, visiting everything from museums to castles and outdoor exhibitions. There's always something new to see, partly because there are so many museums, but also because there are always new exhibitions on show. Here are 12 places to visit for exciting art experiences.
1. Pilane Sculpture Park (Bohuslän)
"Sculpture in Pilane" on the island of Tjörn offers a different art and nature experience every summer, in the middle of the Bohusland landscape. You get a map and walk around, while you discover this year's artwork. The large white female face "Anna", created by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, remains year after year and has become a landmark.
2. Glasriket (Småland)
Glasriket is the area in Småland that has been known for its glassworks and crafts since the 18th century. Today you will find Kosta here, but also a number of small glassworks with a focus on art glass. You can view, shop or participate in a workshop yourself. There are also other types of art, combined with food and nature experiences.
3. Stockholm Metro (Uppland and Södermanland)
The Stockholm metro is said to be the world's longest art exhibition - 110 kilometres long. In total, 94 of the 100 metro stations in the city have been decorated with art, by around 250 different artists. In addition, there are so-called Art exchanges, i.e. seven metro stations where art varies in different temporary exhibitions.
4. man memory in Nordingrå (Ångermanland)
Mannaminne in Nordingrå was created in 1980, by artist Anders Åberg and his wife Barbro Åberg. The site houses a collection of historic buildings, vehicles, museums and art. Åberg is known, among other things, for his wooden sculptures of different types of houses, often in the form of imaginative models.
5. Street Art in Strömstad (Bohuslän)
Artscape Lighthouse was Sweden's largest street art project in 2022. The artworks, which are both delicious and impressive in their size, are still standing and can be discovered, for example, during a bike ride. You can ask for a map at the city's tourist office.
6. Borås City of Art (Västergötland)
If you like art, Borås is a great place to visit. You can visit the Borås Art Museum and the fantastic Abecita Pop Art & Photo Museum. You can also check out lots of exciting street art or go on a sculpture walk. The city is also known for its art festivals: Borås Art Biennial and No Limit. It doesn't get more artistic than this!
7. Albert Engström Museum in Grisslehamn (Uppland)
The artist Albert Engström was born in 1869 in Småland, but eventually ended up in Grisslehamn, where he built his artist's studio by the sea. The artist is perhaps best known for the drawing with the text "Crayfish demand these drinks". You can learn much more than this when you visit his home and studio, which is on display at certain times in the summer.
8. Nimis artwork (Skåne)
Nimis is a fascinating artwork on the Kulla Peninsula in Skåne, created by artist Lars Vilks. Built without permission, the work measures almost 200 metres in length and takes possession of the inaccessible site in an exciting way. The artwork is made of driftwood and branches, and is equipped with 15 metre high towers. Right next to Nimis is the Arx artwork, a sculpture made of stone and concrete.
9. Udden sculpture in Hunnebostrand (Bohuslän)
In the old quarry, right next to the sea on the North Quay in Hunnebostrand, you can check out the art exhibition "Udden skulptur". Some of the artworks are on display all year round, while a new exhibition with new sculptures is presented every summer. Well worth a visit!
10. Street Art in Malmö (Skåne)
The Artscape street art festival was founded in Malmö in 2014, which led to the city getting a long line of amazing murals, created by artists from all over the world. Over time, the artworks have multiplied and you can find them both in the Old Town in the centre of Malmö, and in the city's various suburbs.
11. Stockholm Art Museums (Uppland)
The capital of Sweden is home to a wide range of interesting and exciting art museums. Some of the ones worth mentioning include Liljevalchs Konsthall, Nationalmuseum, Sven-Harry Art Museum, Fotografiska Museum, Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, Moderna Museet, Thielska Gallery and Artipelag.
12. Halmstad City of Art
We'll end by mentioning Halmstad, which also has a lot of art to offer. You can visit Mjellby Art Museum, Halland Art Museum and Halmstad Art Centre. In addition, there is a lot of street art and public art to discover, all around the city.

We always enjoy lists like this to see what we've seen/haven't seen and maybe get tips on new sights. Since we like to look at art and preferably art outside the traditional museums, we have actually visited nine of the twelve on your list and also the five on your bucket list. We have not seen Nimis or looked at Street Art in Malmö. We have not visited Albert Engström's museum in Grisslehamn, but we have visited the section of Eksjö Museum that is dedicated to him, because that is where he was born.
Isn't it great that many cities now issue maps for art walks? Our latest art experience was Street Art in Vänersborg a couple of weeks ago. They had such an Art Scape festival last summer. Right now we can't think of another art experience like this off the top of our heads.

A couple of recognised places I'm happy to recommend and which may deserve a place on your list:
The Sculpture Park in Umeå and the Zorn Museum in Mora.

You've missed Konst på hög outside Kumla, Närke! Just the view itself is worth a visit, where you can see out over the entire Nærkeslätten. Permanent art exhibition on a 100 metre high 'slag heap' (it smokes from the heat of the heap a little here and there). If you feel fit, take the stairs upp👍🏻😊
