Visiting a moose park
There are several moose parks and other safari parks in Sweden, both in Småland and further north. We have several times been about to visit one, but then it has not been seasonal or closed for some other reason ... But now so!
So, what is it like to visit a moose park? It can certainly be different, but at Glasrikets Älgpark the main activity is moose safaris. In addition to this, there are other activities, such as a moose shop and the opportunity to eat moose meat.
Glasrikets Moose Park in Småland
Glasrikets Älgpark is a very nice park, with a scenic location. There is a large herd of moose (currently 12), but also alpacas and a pond for fishing.
Glasrikets Älgpark is located just outside the centre of Nybro, in Glasriket in Småland.
Moose safari in Glasrikets Moose Park
The main attraction at Glasrikets Moose Park is moose safariand this was the main purpose of our visit. You can either go on a guided moose safari in wagons behind a tractor or in your own car.
If you can, we'd recommend the guided tractor tour, as you'll have a guide to tell you about the magnificent animals. You're also likely to get a little closer, as the moose are used to walking up to the tractor trailers to get some "snacks" in the form of green twigs.
We jumped into one of the carriages, together with some German tourists. At this point, in early May, it was relatively quiet and plenty of room in the carriages. In the summer, it can apparently be very busy here with 3-4 carriages during each tour, and up to 16 people in each carriage.
We chugged into the moose park at a slow pace, and almost immediately saw a few moose looking up unconcernedly as the tractor team rattled past.
After a while we saw a slightly larger group of moose and the tractor-trailer stopped. The guide handed out bunches of green twigs to us tourists, which we could feed the moose with. It was very clear that the moose had been there before, because they came quickly and purposefully to the wagons to get a bite of the yummy twigs.
Being Swedes, who have spent a lot of time in summer cottages and in the countryside, we have of course seen moose many times. Wild moose are shy so you usually see them at a certain distance. A few times we have happened to get really close, and then it's almost like you get your heart in your throat and think about how to best back away.
Now we could get really close to the moose without having to worry. On the one hand, these moose are used to people, and on the other hand, you are protected inside the sturdy tractor trailers.
Such beautiful animals! Not only graceful and beautiful, but also calm in manner.
The guide told us lots of interesting things about the moose and their lives. Among other things, he told us about the horns, which the moose shed every year, and which had recently started to grow again.
Aren't they pretty when they peek into the pram? "Have you got any more green twigs for me?" the moose seems to ask ... We had now been out in the park for just under an hour and it was slowly time to head back.

When you visit a moose park, it's usually to see moose, but there are also a number of other things to see and do in Glasrikets Älgpark. First of all, you can take a look inside The Moose Shed, where you can find lots of products related to moose: souvenirs, soft toys and various moose-themed gadgets. You can also buy "Hunter's Juice" or "Moose Juice", for example.
There are also more animal and nature experiences in Glasrikets Moose Park. There is a small pond with planted rainbow trout, where you can try your luck at fishing. Fishing licences for this purpose can be bought in the Moose Shop. If the fishing luck is good, you can grill the fish in the grill house, and spices for the purpose can be found in the shop.
The park is also home to charming alpacas and beautiful island chickens.
If you get hungry during your visit to Glasrikets Moose Park, there is a cure for this. In the Grill House you can eat grilled moose sausages, moose burgers and moose pizza, or for example waffles with jam. It is also possible to grill things that you have bought (or fished) in the Moose Park.
When we were here, construction was in full swing to create a larger restaurant. The moose park, which once started on a small scale with three moose, is growing fast and becoming more and more popular.
More to see and do in the neighbourhood
If you're not content with visiting a moose park, there's much more to see and do in the area. In Glasriket you can of course visit Kosta and other smaller glassworks and glassworks. In Nybro, you won't want to miss the charming James Bond Museum.
If you like nature and adventure, we can also recommend Kosta Safari Park, Sweden Zipline, Vidinge Farm where you can hike or go packrafting and Ödevata farm hotel, where you can, for example, take a sauna on a sauna raft.
