The summer heat embraced us as we drove across the Öland Bridge, ready to explore this gem of the Baltic Sea. With a close friend by my side and my family waiting for us, I knew this Midsummer would be special.
Öland is Sweden's smallest province but with a grandeur that extends far beyond its modest size.
Ottenby Nature Centre
Our first stop was Naturum Ottenby, a paradise for ornithologists and nature lovers.
Walking through the reserve and experiencing the rich bird life was like stepping into a painting of nature's own art. Beautiful views of the sea and the unique flora and fauna that Öland is known for, made it an unforgettable day.
We stayed at Ottenby Vandrarhem, a cosy retreat where the wings of history can be felt in every brick. The sunset over Kalmarsund was outstanding and waking up to the symphony of birdsong was a pure delight for the soul.
Öland - characterised by history
Öland's landscape is open and marked by its history, with over 300 windmills reaching for the sky, a living legacy of the hard work of previous generations. It's easy to understand why the wind and the culture around windmills is so deeply rooted here.
Exploring Öland also means taking part in its unique gastronomy and local traditions. The flavours of kroppkakor and lufsa, while sharing stories at the dinner table, combine tradition with a sense of community.
For those who love history and architecture, a visit to Solliden Castle a must-see. Situated overlooking the Baltic Sea, the castle is an impressive testimony to Öland's royal connection.
With its long sandy beaches and a variety of hiking trails, Öland also offers relaxation and adventure for all tastes. Whether it's exploring the Mörbylångaleden trail or just enjoying the tranquillity of the open countryside, there is something for every traveller to discover.
Öland, with its rich flora and fauna, is also a paradise for orchid lovers, with 35 species and subspecies flowering in spring. It's hard not to be fascinated by the biodiversity this island has to offer.
Midsummer on Öland
Midsummer on Öland was a trip to the island of memories, where every moment was filled with laughter, discoveries and a feeling of being closer to nature than ever before. Öland has a special place in my heart now, and I already long to return to its open landscapes and friendly people.
If you're looking for a place where you can experience Sweden's natural beauty and rich history, look no further than Öland. It's a gem waiting to be discovered, whether it's at Midsummer or any other time of the year.
Welcome to the Öland - where every day is an opportunity to create memories for life.
