Around Siljan by car or motorhome
Where to start when travelling around Lake Siljan by car or motorhome? Yes, you can of course start wherever you want. We came from Hälsingland, so we started in Orsa. Here we choose to present the route starting in Rättvik.
1. Rättvik
Rättvik is an extremely popular destination in summer, with lots of tourists. Most want to walk out on the 628 metre long Långbryggan, which has become a kind of hallmark of Rättvik. It's also popular to look at handicrafts or to munch on a Rättvik ice cream.
One tip is to visit the cosy Vidablick, which offers a lovely view. For something a little more special, try summer tobogganing, discover Springkällan (which has been spouting water since it was drilled here in 1869!), see a concert at Dalhalla or take a trip to Styggforsen.
Stay overnight: We stayed with the motorhome one night at Rättviksgården. Good location, but relatively expensive in relation to the service. Other options include First Camp Enåbadet - Rättvik or First Camp Siljansbadet - Rättvik, where you can stay in a campervan or cabin.
2. Nusnäs
If you continue in a north-westerly direction along Lake Siljan, your next stop could be Nusnäs, outside Mora. Here you'll find what is perhaps the most Swedish of Swedish things: the production of Dala horses.
No less than two Dala horse manufacturers are located here, in the form of Nils Olsson Hemslöjd and Grannas A Olsson Hemslöjd. You can shop for Dala horses and Dala horse products, and also see how they are made.
Stay overnight: We didn't stay overnight here, but there is a car park for motorhomes and it's probably fine to spend the night there if you want. If you want to stay in another way, there are of course hotels and other accommodation options in Mora.
3. Orsa
From Nusnäs we let the tour continue up to Orsa, which is a small but nice place. Here you may want to have a coffee at Orsa kaffestuga or shop in Orsa saluhall. We can also highly recommend an excursion to Storstupet and Helvetesfallet - two fascinating places that are close to each other.
Stay overnight: First Camp Orsa - Dalarna is beautifully located, right next to Lake Orsa. There is a long, fine sandy beach, but also a pool area, adventure golf and a wide range of activities in summer. There is also a caravan park called Kättingen caravan park.
4. Mora
The next stop on the journey, around Siljan by car or motorhome, will be lovely Mora. The biggest attraction here, apart from the Dala horses in Nusnäs, is of course Zorngården and the Zorn Museum. Anders and Emma Zorn lived here, and it is incredibly interesting to go on a guided tour. In Mora, you can also check out the Vasalopp finish line, enjoy an ice cream at the Ice Cream Parlour or peek into the Morakniv Concept Store.
Stay overnight: If you wish, you can stay overnight at First Camp Moraparken - Dalarna, where you can choose between staying in your own campervan, cabin, glamping tent or hotel.
5. Gesunda and Sollerön
Just south of Mora is Gesunda and the island of Sollerön. We never actually went out to Sollerön, but anyone who wants to can get there by car or motorhome, via bridge. On Sollerön you can, for example, hike or fish, and there are also burial grounds from the Viking Age.
If you are travelling with children, it can be fun to visit the fairytale land Tomteland, which is also located in this area. Another nearby attraction is the Siljansfors Forest and Naval Museum.
Stay overnight: Sollerö camping is located on Sollerö Island. If you are staying on the mainland, you can stay overnight with a motorhome at the caravan park at Gesunda bystuga. If you are not camping, you can stay at Åsengården Boende & Gästgiveri.
6. Siljansnäs
If you continue around Siljan by car or campervan, heading towards Leksand, you first come to Siljansnäs. Here, on Björkberget, you'll find Naturum Dalarna, with a large viewing tower and great exhibitions about animals and nature. Here you will also find the cosy café Buffils Anna, where you can eat waffles with Skagenröra.
Stay overnight: We stayed, with the motorhome, one night at Fornby Långbrygga rest area, where you stand nicely by the water. Other options are Västanviksbadets camping or Siljansnäs camping.
7. Leksand
Leksand has a lot to offer! You can shop at Leksand's crispbread, have fun at Leksand Sommarland or why not experience Sweden's largest midsummer celebration? It's also nice to take a boat trip on Lake Siljan, for example a shrimp cruise with M/S Gustaf Wasa.
However, what we found most interesting in Leksand was to visit Munthes Hildasholm, which once belonged to the doctor Axel Munthe and his wife Hilda Pennington Mellor Munthe. Here you can take a guided tour of the house, or stroll through the beautiful gardens.
Stay overnight: If you want to camp, you can choose Leksand Resort or Tällbergs Camping. There are also some easier places for motorhomes, such as the car park outside Leksand's crispbread. Many motorhomes also park near Leksand's homesteads.
8. Tällberg
Tällberg is an incredibly charming village with beautiful traditional wooden houses and great views of Lake Siljan. You'll also find a number of hotels, restaurants and craft shops here. If you want, you can drive the charming Tourist Road here, which runs between Leksand and Rättvik.
Stay overnight: Tällberg is probably Sweden's most hotel-dense village, with no less than eight hotels. There is also Tällberg's campsite, which is beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Siljan. Tällberg Golf Club also offers some pitches.
Bonus after Siljan Runt
Fancy continuing your road trip after Siljan Runt? You can of course travel in different directions, depending on your interests and where you are going. One suggestion is to visit the areas around Falun and Borlänge, including sights such as the Falu mine and the Carl Larsson farm.
The Carl Larsson farm
One destination you won't want to miss is The Carl Larsson farm in Sundborn, where the artists Carl and Karin Larsson lived and worked. Very interesting!
Falun
It is also well worth visiting the World Heritage City Falun with Dalarna Museum, Sjösidan Falun and Lugnet ski jumping hills.
Falu mine
The biggest attraction in Falun is undoubtedly Falu mine, where you can join an exciting guided tour underground.
Borlänge
In the neighbourhoods around Borlänge you can visit Ornässtugan, see ostriches at Sahlins struts, shop at Skedvi bröd and be fascinated by the Silvberg mine.
