This summer, I have the pleasure of spending a few wonderful days on Adelsö, one of the hidden gems of Lake Mälaren. With its sparkling waters, lush nature and rich history, every moment on the island was a memorable experience. Join me as I share my personal adventures and discoveries on this idyllic island.
Historical treasures on Adelsö
Adelsö has a rich history that stretches far back in time, which makes it an exciting place for me who is interested in Sweden's past. Here I found, among other things:
Hovgården
An ancient site that, together with Birka, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. Walking among the burial mounds and ruins, I really felt the wings of history. It's incredible to think that this was once an important place during the Viking Age.
Adelsö church
This beautiful medieval church was built in the 12th century and has a fascinating history. I love visiting the church, enjoying the beautiful frescoes and experiencing the peaceful atmosphere that permeates the whole building.
Scenic experiences
Adelsö is not only a place for historical discoveries; the island also offers amazing scenic experiences. Here I could really relax and enjoy nature:
- Hiking and cycling: I loved discovering the island on foot or by bike. There are several beautiful paths and roads that took me through forests, meadows and along the shores of Lake Mälaren. One of my favourite excursions was hiking through Adelsö Ecopark, where I could experience the local flora and fauna up close.
- Swimming and boating: The clear waters of Lake Mälaren invite for swimming and boating. There are several cosy swimming spots around the island where I could take a refreshing dip. When I had access to a boat, I loved exploring the island from the water - the view was absolutely stunning.
Local culture and food
For those interested in local culture and gastronomy, Adelsö offers several pleasant experiences that I was happy to participate in:
- Adelsö Musteri: A visit to Adelsö Musteri is a must. I loved tasting their delicious, organic apple products, including must and cider. The winery also offers guided tours and tastings that give an insight into the production.
- Local markets and events: I was always on the lookout for local markets and events where I could buy crafts, food and other products directly from the island's producers. These occasions gave me a chance to meet the locals and get an insight into their lifestyle.
Accommodation options
Adelsö offers several charming accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets. Here are some of my favourites:
- Holiday cottage rental: Renting a cottage is a great way to really experience the tranquillity and natural beauty of the island. There are several cottages to choose from, each with its own unique charm.
- Bed & Breakfast: For a more personalised experience, you can stay at one of the island's cosy Bed & Breakfasts. Here I not only got a comfortable room but also the chance to enjoy homemade breakfast and personalised service.
Plan your trip to Adelsö
Adelsö is easy to reach by car or boat. From Stockholm it takes about an hour by car, including a short ferry ride from Ekerö. For those who prefer public transport, there are buses that run from Stockholm to Ekerö, where you can change to the ferry across to Adelsö.
My time on Adelsö was filled with unforgettable experiences, and I highly recommend a visit to this amazing island. With its rich history, beautiful nature and friendly atmosphere, Adelsö is a perfect destination for a day trip or a longer stay. Pack your bags, bring your camera and prepare to discover one of Lake Mälaren's best kept secrets. I promise, you won't be disappointed!
