When you're on the Greek island of Karpathos, we highly recommend visiting Menetes. This small mountain village is relatively close to the main town of Pigadia and offers both dramatic views and charming alleyways. There's also a lovely winery here, which is open to visitors.

Menetes on Karpathos
Menetes is a small mountain village, so picturesque that it makes a perfect postcard. Looking up at the village, you'll hardly believe it's there on the mountain, and looking down from the village, you'll be treated to glorious views.
Menetes is located about 7 kilometres from the main town of Pigadia, on the Greek island of Karpathos in the Aegean Sea.
Menetes - a town on a steep cliff
The small village of Menetes is perched on a steep cliff, 315 metres above sea level, and is home to over 600 people all year round. Living here must be special! At the same time, the villagers are relatively close to the island's main town, Pigadia.
Cosy alleys in Menetes
Visiting Menetes means being able to wander around really cosy neighbourhoods. The winding alleys go in all directions and it's easy to get lost. Where did I come from? Which alley should I choose to move on?
Perhaps it is a task in itself to let oneself get lost, among colourful houses, long staircases, cerise flowers and black cats that softly and almost imperceptibly slip between the legs of a ...
Everywhere, of course, you can enjoy the marvellous views.
Things to see and do in Menetes
Although Menetes is just a small village, there is a lot to experience. For starters, you might want to head up to the main church, Chiesa di Kimissis Theotokou, which has of course been given a spectacular position in the village.
From here you have great views and photo opportunities. In addition, there is a small museum in the village, in one of the former shelters from the Second World War.
Menetes has plenty of cafés and tavernas serving Greek food, such as moussaka, wine loaves and feta cheese in every conceivable way.
There is also a cosy little bakery, where you can buy fresh bread and sweet pastries. In addition, there is a winery - the only official winery in all of Karpathos.
Scarpanto Wines
Scarpanto Wines started in 2008, but it was only this year that it opened its winery to visitors. Throughout the summer, they have been welcoming tourists, and in the afternoons they have been offering spontaneous wine tastings. Although the concept is new, it has already become popular. So far, there's no need to book - you can just drop by - but in the future, things could be different.
Scarpanto Wines currently makes three white wines, two reds and one rosé, all made from grapes grown on the island. Several of the wines are easy to drink and are suitable on their own, or with a salad or light meal. Others have a little more character.
We liked all the wines very much, perhaps with the exception of the wine the locals like most. They want a red wine, which is really sweet. That's how the people of Karpathos like their wine to taste, and of course they make wine to suit the islanders.
More to see and do in the neighbourhood
Apart from visiting Menetes, there is of course much more to See and experience Karpathos. Not far from the mountain village is the main town of Pigadia, where you will find lots of cosy restaurants. You can also visit pleasant Amoopi, the cosy fishing village of Finiki and the charming tourist resort of Lefkos. In addition, you can visit Olymbos in the north, Saria Island and all the beautiful beaches on Karpathos. Renting and driving a car on Karpathos is an easy way to get around!
