Restaurants in Innsbruck
We have just returned from a really nice trip to Innsbruck - a city that really surprised us. The mountains provide a fantastic backdrop to this city, and there are plenty of beautiful buildings, historic sights, good food and, not least, good wines.
There are of course many restaurants in Innsbruck, in different price ranges. We managed to visit a bunch, all of which were good in different ways. Some because they were cosy with traditional food from the Alps, others because they serve modern and creative food and still others because they combine good food with dramatic views. In total, we can recommend eight nice restaurants in Innsbruck.
1. the poacher
One of the evenings in Innsbruck we ate at the restaurant Die Wilderin, which is located on one of the central streets in the middle of the old town. This is a cosy and popular restaurant, with a modern atmosphere and good service.
The menu was really exciting we must say, with creative meat and vegetable dishes. Peter started with a starter of raw lamb fillet and I (Helena) chose a beetroot starter. For the main course, we had lamb stew and horse meatballs with tagliatelle. Especially the starters were extra good here!
Address: Sellergasse 5, Innsbruck
2. the Kofel, Patscherkofel
Das Kofel is a restaurant located at the top of the Patscherkofel mountain. You get here with the cable car Patscherkofelbahn, which you can reach by bus "J", and the great thing is, among other things, the location and the fantastic view. When we were here, it was both cloudy and rough, but it was still delicious to sit and eat up among the clouds.
This restaurant serves traditional Tyrolean food. Even before we entered, we were served mulled wine, followed by bread and scrambled eggs before it was time for creamy and delicious pumpkin soup. The main course was a generous portion (for two) with different kinds of meat, ham and sausages, which was served with dumplings, mustard and horseradish.
This type of food is very sticky and maybe not our favourite food really, but it belongs to try when you are in Tyrol and here everything was well cooked and of good quality. The meal ended with pastries, chestnuts, nuts and fruit, and then we were really full we can promise ...
Address: Patscherkofelbahn mountain station, Innsbruck
3. the Brahms
One of the nicer restaurants in Innsbruck that we ate at was Das Brahms. This restaurant offers an upscale and slightly more luxurious atmosphere, with copper fittings and huge flower creations.
We both started with a salmon tartare which was very good, if a little large for an appetiser. Then we both continued with the fish course. Peter chose pike-perch and I chose char, which was served on a bed of delicious red risotto. A very nice restaurant evening with a luxurious feel!
Address: Universitätsstrasse 1, Innsbruck
4th Tyrol wine house
One of the evenings in Innsbruck, we attended a wine tasting at Weinhaus Tyrol, which was a fantastic experience. Here you sit in the middle of the small wine shop, or in the cosy wine tasting room, if you are a slightly larger group.
The store has many Austrian and Italian wines, and we chose a tasting with a focus on Austrian wine. The girl who guided us through the tasting was both knowledgeable and cheerfully relaxed, and helped us have a very pleasant evening.
After the first wines, the ordered dinner was served, consisting of a charcuterie tray from a local market nearby, accompanied by bread. The whole fantastic delicious! We didn't manage to eat it all and took the leftovers with us as a doggy bag - which became a perfect lunch bag for the train journey home a little later.
Address: Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse 32/1, Innsbruck
5. Bacon products
We had a slightly simpler version of wine with charcuterie for lunch one day at Speckeria, in the centre of the old town. Here you step into a small, and incredibly charming, charcuterie shop, where there are also a small number of tables. We simply ordered a glass of white wine and a tray of charcuterie. Very, very good!
Address: Hofgasse 3, Innsbruck
6. sea caves, northern chain
If you like mountains and views, it's also well worth eating at the Seegrube restaurant, on the Nordkette mountain. It's easily reached by cable car from the Congress Centre in central Innsbruck, and then by cable car up to the restaurant at 1,905 metres. At the restaurant there are viewing points with wide views in all directions and, if it's not foggy, there are also great views directly from the dining table.
The restaurant offers mainly traditional Tyrolean and Austrian dishes, but also some more creative ones. We went for a fairly classic meal here, with soup as a starter, schnitzel as a main course and then a piece of sachertorte to share. Everything tasted very good!
Address: Nordkette, Innsbruck
7th Daniels, Swarovski Crystal Worlds
If you are visiting the Swarovski Kristallwelten (and you might want to do that if you are visiting Innsbruck!) you might want to eat at Restaurant Daniels. This is a restaurant with dishes in the slightly higher price range, but on the other hand, everything we ate here tasted very, very good.
Peter ordered a steak with vegetables, along with sweet potato fries. I chose sous vide cooked corn chicken with polenta. This was one of the very best meals we had in Innsbruck.
Address: Swarowski Crystal Worlds, Kristallweltenstrasse 1, Wattens
8th Lehnberghaus mountain hut
On one of the days in Innsbruck, we took a bus trip to Mötz, about an hour west of Innsbruck. From here we did a hike (in the rain!) past the Arzkasten Gasthaus and then further up, with the final destination Lehnberghaus alpine hut.
It's not that the food is special here, but experiencing the nature of the Tyrol and having a simple and traditional meal in one of the many Alpine huts (which of course tastes very good after a strenuous hike!) is highly recommended.
The Lehnberghaus serves traditional dishes such as sausages, dumplings and sauerkraut. We both chose käsespätzle, a kind of pasta served with cheese and roasted onions. Delicious in all its simplicity! Afterwards we chose to share an apple strudel. Very good that too!
Address: Lehnberg, Austria
More restaurants in Innsbruck?
There are of course many more good restaurants in Innsbruck, although we didn't get to try any more. One tip we got from our guide is to look far in through the open gates - or to look up the stairs. Often the restaurants that only the locals can find are far inside, or upstairs.
If you like food, we can also recommend a visit to the Markthalle, where you can find lots of locally produced goodies in the form of charcuterie, cheeses, bread, pastries, fruit and vegetables. In addition, there is often a great atmosphere here with, for example, entertainment and wine tasting.
More to see and do in Innsbruck
There is of course much more to What to see and do in Innsbruck and in other Austria. Although Innsbruck is a smaller city, there are many magnificent and fascinating historical sights such as the Hofkirche church, the Hofburg palace, the Golden Roof, St James' Cathedral and Ambras Castle.
You can also visit the world of Swarovski crystals or the Bergisel Ski Jump, and of course hiking or skiing.
