Rhodes beaches - our top tips

We visited Rhodes in September, when the climate is really pleasant and when there are less people, compared to the high season. A great time of year!

We first spent two days in Rhodes town, and then we took the boat to Karpathos island. When we returned to Rhodes after a week, we hired a car and travelled around the whole island. During this trip, we managed to check out a bunch of great beaches, and here we offer our top tips. Of course, there may be even more gems - these are the best beaches in Rhodes that we managed to discover.

1. Elli Beach and Windy Beach, Rhodes Town

In Rhodes Town, there is Elli Beach (on the eastern side) and Windy Beach (on the western side). The latter, as its name suggests, can be quite windy.

Both beaches are covered with gravel or pebbles and there are several places where you can rent sunbeds. There are also plenty of restaurants along the water in several places. You can also see some really beautiful sunsets here!

2. Ialyssos

Ialyssos is located in the north-western part of Rhodes, just eight kilometres from Rhodes Town. This is a popular tourist resort and there are many holiday hotels here. Parts of the beach are private and belong to different hotels, but there are also public parts, where you can rent sunbeds and parasols. Expect gravel or pebbles.

3. Kameiros Beach

Kameiros beach is located on the north-western coast of Rhodes, about 30 kilometres from Rhodes Town. The beach is beautifully surrounded by greenery, and there are also some beach restaurants in a good location. Also nearby are the ruins of the 3000-year-old city of Kameiros. An interesting attraction for anyone who loves ancient history!

4. Alyki Beach

Monolithos Castle is located on the west coast of Rhodes, and is the ruins of a 15th century castle on a dramatic cliff. The castle has a small café, and from here you can continue along winding roads to reach Alyki and Fourni beaches.

Alyki Beach is the first of these two beaches. This gravel beach is very beautiful and when we were here, in the month of September, there were also relatively few visitors on the beach. A quiet and beautiful little oasis!

5. Fourni Beach

If you drive a little further, you will reach Fourni Beach. This is also a smaller, and very quiet beach, framed by beautiful white cliffs. A very nice place if you like quieter beaches! In addition, as I said, the castle ruins, Monolithos Castle, are nearby.

6. Prassonisi Beach

On the southernmost part of Rhodes island is Prassonisi beach. This is a wide and really nice sandy beach, which is special because in one place you have beach on two sides.

Prassonisi Beach is primarily popular with surfers, both windsurfers and kite-surfers. When we were here, we saw both experienced skilled surfers, and beginners practising with instructors.

7. Pefkos Beach

The holiday resort of Pefkos is located on the eastern side of Rhodes, just south of the larger resort of Lindos. There is a fine sandy beach with sun loungers for hire, as well as restaurants and tavernas where you can get a bite to eat.

8. Lindos

The popular resort of Lindos is located approximately 48 kilometres south of Rhodes Town. It has a long history and is home to one of Rhodes' major tourist attractions, the ancient temple of the Acropolis, perched on a cliff 116 metres above the village.

The fact that this is a popular place was evident from the fact that this was the only place, during our tour around the island, where we had to pay a parking fee. It was also incredibly crowded with tourists, even though we were in mid-September. Lindos Main Beach is the largest beach here, but there are also several smaller beaches.

9. Stegna Beach

Stegna Beach is located at the tourist resort of Stegna, on the east coast of Rhodes. A winding road led us down to the beach and during the journey we met a goat, which crossed the road in search of shade.

The car parks were almost full, but the atmosphere on the long sandy beach was still quite calm and relaxed. Along the road above there are many tavernas and eateries.

10. Tsambika Beach

Tsambika Beach has sometimes been considered the most beautiful beach in Rhodes, and it's not hard to see why. This fine sandy beach is beautifully set between high mountains. We also liked the atmosphere here, with music from loudspeakers and a restaurant where you sit with your feet more or less in the sand.

You can book a massage on the beach, and there is also a large "water park" out in the water, where you can jump and play. There is also a monastery nearby called Tsambika monastery.

11. Anthony Quinn Bay

One of Rhodes' beaches you won't want to miss is Anthony Quinn Bay, located about 18 kilometres south of Rhodes Town. There are several small beaches here, with charming cliffs, walking paths and viewpoints. The water is crystal clear and the place is also great for snorkelling.

Just above the beaches there is a small restaurant/bar where you can order something to drink. Here we would have liked to stay even longer, if it had not been that this was our last stop before the airport ...

12th Kallithea Springs

Another place worth mentioning is Kallithea Springs, or the springs of Kallithea. Since ancient times, the springs in the area have been renowned for their beneficial powers, and in the first half of the 20th century, a number of beautiful buildings were erected around the springs.

Today, it is popular to make an excursion here to stay in the beautiful and green surroundings. There are also plenty of sun loungers and there are food and drink outlets. You can swim both from the beach and from the rocks.

More to see and do in Rhodes

The beaches of Rhodes are great, but there's more to discover on this Greek island. We recommend visiting Rhodes Town and the castle in Rhodes Town. Other attractions on the island include Seven Springs and the Valley of Butterflies, among others. You can also continue by boat to other islands, such as the beautiful island of Karpathos.
