The tour I was on was a full-day trip that went to Sigtuna and Uppsala, from Stockholm City. The first stop on our journey was among some of Sweden's oldest rune stones, where the echoes of history could almost be felt in the air. Under tall trees and the crisp autumn air, we stood by these ancient stone monuments, which the Vikings erected to honour their loved ones.
As our guide from Sweden History Tours explained the meaning of the runes, we felt like we were transported back in time a thousand years. These inscriptions are not just texts - they are living stories of courage, loss and strength.
The Viking Parliament and the birth of democracy
Then it was off to one of the Viking Age courthouses, an ancient Viking parliament where decisions were made and disputes resolved. Standing in this place, where the Vikings gathered to build society through democratic processes, gave me a new perspective on Swedish history. Under the clear autumn sky, we learned about the power of the ancient kings and how the site played a central role in both pagan and Christian beliefs. With the stillness of nature all around us and the autumn leaves slowly falling, the day became even more magical.

No journey through Swedish history is complete without hearing about Gustavus Vasa, and our guide took us through the exciting story of his dramatic rise to power. From rebellion and escape to his role as father of the country, we gained a deeper understanding of how Gustav Vasa shaped Sweden as we know it today. It was truly inspiring to stand in the places where this story unfolded and hear about the defining moments that shaped the nation.
