Last week I had the pleasure of participating in The Stockholm Food Tour, a food walk through the Old Town, with the fantastic guides Calle and Jonathan. They were not only friendly and engaging, but also incredibly knowledgeable. Their historical stories added an extra dimension to the experience and made the day both educational and fun.
We started outside Stortorget in Gamla Stan, where the group met up. It was great that the other participants were Swedes from northern Sweden! I think it's great that even Swedes want to learn more about their own cultural heritage in addition to travelling the world.

Flavours and history in perfect harmony
From Stortorget we went to the cosy restaurant Movitz in the Old Town. There we got to taste a classic dish: herring and potatoes. It was absolutely marvellous, especially with a little schnapps Aquavit. For those of you wondering - Aquavit is not the same as brandy. It's a spiced spirit with a long tradition in Sweden, often flavoured with cumin and dill. It's truly a taste of Swedish history in liquid form!
We continued our walk through the charming alleyways of Old Town, where Calle and Jonathan told us captivating stories from the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. I could almost feel the wings of history as we walked past old buildings and places that were once filled with life and drama.
Even I, who have lived in Stockholm for almost 25 years, did not know about all these amazing places. What an invention to combine food and history in one tour!
Body cakes and captivating fika
The next stop was Tradition, a restaurant known for its classic Swedish dishes. There we ate the tastiest body cakes I've ever tasted, served with lingonberry jam. The combination of the soft body cookies and the tart lingonberry jam was a real taste experience!
The food tour ended with a coffee break at a café that was once a medieval prison. Here they served a blueberry pie that was honestly the best I have ever tasted. Imagine a melt-in-your-mouth shortbread filled with juicy blueberries - heaven for all coffee lovers!
The highlight of autumn
This food walk was a real highlight on a grey and chilly autumn day. Tasting so many amazing dishes, hearing exciting stories and enjoying the cosy atmosphere of the Old Town really lifted our spirits and gave the day a wonderful sense of joy.
I highly recommend The Stockholm Food Tour for anyone who wants to explore Swedish food culture in a different and fun way.
