You probably already know that the Swedish archipelago is a unique treasure with an astonishing number of islands. But how many islands does Sweden actually have? Over 267,570. From the populated larger islands to the smallest skerries, Sweden's archipelago offers unrivalled opportunities for boat trips and nature experiences. Each island has its own history and character. Read on to learn more about some popular destinations in Stockholm.

How many islands does Sweden have? Stockholm's most popular

As mentioned, Sweden has a total of 267 570 islands. This figure includes all islands that are at least 25 square metres. If we also include smaller islands, the figure becomes closer to 270 000.

Of all these islands, only about 984 are inhabited. The Stockholm archipelago, which forms a significant part of Sweden's island landscape, is home to several particularly popular islands that attract both tourists and locals. They offer, for example, nice restaurants, beautiful nature and interesting architecture.

Some of the most popular islands for a boat trip in Stockholm are Vaxholm, Utö and Grinda. On these islands there are some special attractions that attract visitors, such as inns and smokehouses with ancient origins, including Rökeriet Fjäderholmarna.

Excursion Stockholm archipelago

Stockholm, also known as the Venice of the North, is famous for its unique archipelago of thousands of islands. This contributes to making it one of Sweden's most attractive holiday destinations. Here I will describe some examples of popular islands in Stockholm and some highlights of their offer.

Hamnkrogen Vaxholm

Vaxholms Hamnkrog dates back to 1985 and is located in the heart of Vaxholm harbour, overlooking the Vaxholm fortress and the waterway. The restaurant occupies a central position in the city's restaurant scene and offers a menu that focuses on traditional Swedish home cooking with a special emphasis on local archipelago specialities and fresh fish.

On the review page Tripadvisor the restaurant has a rating of 4.0 out of 5 based on 270 reviews. This high score makes Hamnkrogen Vaxholm the number one restaurant in Vaxholm. How many islands does Sweden have with such highly rated harbour restaurants? We don't know exactly, but it can't be common.

Fjäderholmarna smokehouse

This is a well-established restaurant located on Stora Fjäderholmen, the largest island in the Fjäderholmarna archipelago in the Stockholm inner archipelago. The restaurant's location, about 20 minutes by boat from the centre of Stockholm, makes it accessible to both local visitors and tourists who want to experience the food traditions of the archipelago.

The restaurant specialises in smoked fish and seafood. The establishment dates back to the 17th century and includes both a restaurant and a smokehouse. In the smokehouse, guests can see how the staff smoke the fish using traditional methods. The menu consists mainly of local fish dishes and archipelago specialities, with a particular focus on home-smoked salmon and other seasonal fish dishes from the local area.

The Fjäderholmarna smokehouse also has an ice cream parlour and a delicatessen. Why not buy an ice cream at the kiosk, which you can then enjoy on the jetty while having fun playing foreign casino on your mobile phone? Operations follow the seasonal pattern of the archipelago and are mainly open during the high season, from spring to early autumn.

Utö Inn

Located on the scenic island of Utö in Stockholm's southern archipelago, the next destination represents a significant part of the island's cultural and historical heritage. The inn dates back to the 19th century and over the centuries has become a reputable business that combines accommodation, restaurant and conference activities.

Utö Inn includes a main building with a restaurant and several neighbouring buildings for overnight stays. The restaurant is known for its seasonal menu with a focus on local produce and archipelago-inspired dishes.

The kitchen actively works to integrate modern trends while preserving the tradition of classic Swedish home cooking. How many islands does Sweden have that can offer that level of experience? Certainly not many.

Sandhamn Sailing Hotel

We must also mention the Sailing Hotel on the island of Sandhamn in the central Stockholm archipelago. It is a popular destination for sailors and other archipelago visitors. The hotel has a long tradition and strong roots in sailing culture.

Sandhamn Sailing Hotel includes a hotel with modern rooms and suites, a restaurant serving seasonal dishes with a focus on seafood, and conference and meeting facilities. The sailing hotel also has a spa area, where guests can relax after a day at sea.

Many of the businesses on the islands in Stockholm are seasonal and closed during the low season. Sandhamn Seglarhotell, however, is open all year round. In winter, you can enjoy their Christmas buffet and various concerts. Of course, the hotel is also open.

Sandhamn's location, close to both nature and the city, makes it an attractive place for both individuals and companies seeking an inspiring environment for their events. The hotel's proximity to the harbour and its range of activities, such as wine tastings, cold sea baths and a nightclub, make it a complete destination for a Stockholm boat trip.

Grinda Inn

This inn is located on the idyllic island of Grinda in Stockholm's central archipelago. It is a popular destination for both tourists and conference guests. The inn offers a combination of scenic surroundings and professional service, making it an attractive venue for both relaxation and business meetings.

The complex includes a restaurant with a menu that emphasises local produce and archipelago-inspired dishes. In the café you can enjoy an ice cream or a cup of coffee in the sun. There is also a general store where you can buy all the necessities for your trip to Stockholm.

You can also rent accommodation in comfortable rooms and cottages. Grinda Inn is particularly known for its unique atmosphere, combining historical charm with modern amenities.

Conference guests have access to well-equipped meeting rooms that can be customised to suit their needs. The inn's location in the middle of the archipelago also opens up unique opportunities for various team building activities and nature experiences.

This destination is open all year round, with the peak season during the summer months when the archipelago attracts the most visitors. The inn plays a central role on the island and is a natural starting point for visitors wishing to explore Grinda and its surroundings.
