reflection of the week
Italian food is always at the top of Swedish surveys and we agree that the ingredients - hams, tomatoes, olives and so on - are fantastic. When it comes to dishes, we prefer other countries, such as France, Turkey and some Asian countries. What are your favourite food countries?

Mr Nilsson's wife says:
Yes motorhomes are becoming more and more popular. We drive Yankees instead 😊 very nice. These with electric cars are not my melody, they will never be any for me. The Öresund Bridge swallows a lot of traffic and it was nice it came to. I have a use with the Öresund Bridge, a little fun. I worked with bus travel at that time. My favourite trip was probably to New York, a vibrant and wonderful city.

Helena says:
Yes, it was probably lucky that the Öresund Bridge was added, it would have been difficult to transport everyone on ferries ...! New York sounds exciting, we have never been there ...

Eval8 says:
I thought it was awful when the bridge was built. There were a lot of protests, the most famous being the "who the hell wants to ride on a bridge?" thing.
Last bank holiday today, we have had a lot of snow.
06 January 2025 - 10:26
Helena says:
Interesting what you say about the protests! (I don't really remember it). For excursions, ferry is very nice, if it fits, but I guess the bridge is very practical for everyone who commutes if nothing else 😉

Orsakulla mum at 20 - Dala life, fine china & poodle life says:
Exciting there with the concept of the police station. A bit like the prison here in Falun which, at least until before the pandemic, was a hostel. Not sure if they are still in operation? Have for me that they closed down for a while. Anyway there you sleep in cells at night, a bit scary anyway 😅. But also view concept.
06 January 2025 - 11:38
Helena says:
Glad you have (or had) such a hotel in Falun! I like those slightly odd hotels. We have seen prison hotels in Turku among others 😉

Hanneles book paradise says:
has travelled next to the Øresund Bridge with his son's product tanks - not only the children visit the parents' workplace, parents can visit the children's workplace 🙂
06 January 2025 - 12:41
Helena says:
So true! We have also travelled on the bridge at some point, but it's been a long time ...
06 January 2025 - 14:31
Hanneles book paradise says:
next to the bridge was the son's ship, don't remember if I went over.

Snows says:
I clearly remember the protests against the construction of the Öresund Bridge, but how good it turned out, I think. We who live in southern Skåne are now in Germany in a couple of hours and it is so convenient.
When it comes to favourite foods by country, I find it difficult to choose. Many cuisines have their advantages, and it is also a great pleasure to try the domestic food.
06 January 2025 - 13:10
Helena says:
Sometimes there are protests against things that are "new and different". But yes, I can understand that the bridge is useful both for tourists and for everyone who commutes!

Titti Malmberg says:
Yes, the Italian food is good! Interesting post and I wish you a good continuation and a lovely 2025!
Hugs from Öland & Titti

Thank you all the same! Wishing good continuation of 2025!!!

Mikael Beckfjäll says:
Motorhome seems more flexible, more to my taste than a caravan for sure.
We lived on Tredje Långgatan for a while when I was really small, an apartment there must be optimal, I guess in all my ignorance.
Wishing you a nice evening now. 🙂
06 January 2025 - 16:42
Helena says:
Glad you lived on Tredje Långgatan! 🙂 Motorhome is many times more flexible if you want to move often. Caravan can be flexible if you want to stand for a long time at the same campsite, but have a car to get around with 😉

BP says:
I really like that they are not demolishing the old brick building but turning it into a hotel. Hope its fate is better than that of Hotell Norrtull on St. Eriksgatan. There, the old brick building was also saved, but the hotel went bankrupt in 2020, but seems to have been given new life, I read.
Like you, I think Italian food is totally over-advertised. In fact, I've had the worst pizzas there. A bit surprising that French cuisine ended up so far down.
06 January 2025 - 18:18
Helena says:
Yes, when it comes to Italian food, we agree. There is good food of course, especially raw materials, but the cooking doesn't always live up to the reputation, not in our experience anyway.
07 January 2025 - 12:52
Ditte says:
That's great! Yes, this with food is very dependent on taste and flavour. When it comes to Italy, you often have to order "accessories" separately". Something should be included and spice up what you ordered. I am very much in favour of Asian food; mainly Vietnam, the many cuisines of China, Japanese cuisine, Korean cuisine and not least the Thai.
France also attracts me a lot, both in terms of food and experiences.
Perhaps overlooked here is the fact that the lovely city of San Sebastian in the Basque Country, Spain, has many 'Michelin-starred' restaurants, some 15 in and around the city and 29 in the region. It's an area that comes highly recommended if you're looking to invest in food.
Perhaps you have been in the neighbourhood. If not, the area is recommended.
06 January 2025 - 19:38
Helena says:
Yes, that's how it is in Italy, and sometimes those accessories can be quite unexciting. Asian cuisines are exciting, I agree. We like Chinese and Vietnamese food, for example. We also like Japanese, but we have never eaten Japanese food in Japan. As for Spain, I guess the vast majority vote based on their own experiences, which for most people may be tourist resorts, rather than the Basque Country. San Sebastian is on our list! Thanks for your comment Ditte!

Kamilla says:
Italy is so close to my heart.
So even that I have on the bucket list to live there once in a lifetime at least 6 months.
Was in Rome last autumn and fell in love with the city.
Thanks for the great tips

Rome is a great city, agree! Feels cosy and romantic, despite being a big city 🙂

JoY says:
Fun with the countries' food. Now we have not been to either Mexico Japan and Spain we do not really count as it was only a short trip. I think the food served in Sweden in each country's restaurants is still quite different from being on site.
Italian cuisine is a favourite which has so many different dishes, from north to south, not just pizza. Thailand also with very good fresh dishes and then we have the Indian with a lot of vegetarian which is also good. France with mussels and meat. Yes how to rank? The Chinese food we ate in Beijing was not something we crave, however, the Chinese restaurant here at home has good food. So yes, it is difficult to like a particular country's dishes.
And now it is snowing.
06 January 2025 - 22:27
Helena says:
Agree that it can be different to eat a country's food in Sweden, and in the country itself. And of course it is difficult to rank, the food is so different! I personally enjoyed the Chinese food in China, but I think it differs in different parts of the country, and also from place to place of course.

The Adventure of the Future says:
The Öresund Bridge is good but like many other things for better or worse. A few times I have crossed to Denmark that way.
Italian food is very good but I still thought it was the Thai that would be on top. Lovely anyway with all the different types of cuisine.
06 January 2025 - 23:18
Helena says:
Italian food usually leads the league I think, but Thai is also usually high up! Thailand is a popular country for Swedes to travel to! 🙂
07 January 2025 - 13:03
Monnah says:
We have used the bridge many times and with a daughter in Denmark, many grateful thoughts have gone to its existence!
Incidentally, I have never travelled anywhere because of the cuisine, but I can only agree that wonderful food experiences add to any trip! Top three are Italy (seven courses in Naples), Thailand (almost 100% satisfied with the meals) and Hong Kong (not overall, but a dumpling restaurant that offered heavenly taste sensations)
07 January 2025 - 10:44
Helena says:
Interesting to hear about your top three countries when it comes to food! I like dumplings and HongKong sounds exciting!
07 January 2025 - 13:04
Lillan Child says:
We have noticed that there is a great craving for motorhomes, because we get letters at regular intervals from companies that want to buy ours to resell. But there will be nothing with it:)
I have to admit that I don't like the food in Italy. When we have been there, there has been pasta and pizza on the menus everywhere, and both taste much better at home. When we have ordered meat dishes, they have been without sauce, and without sauce it is not good.
For us, France is our favourite country when it comes to food. We've travelled around the country quite a bit and eaten the dishes of different regions. Wonderfully tasty!
Hugs!
07 January 2025 - 13:04
Helena says:
We also like the food in France! And yes, they often talk about the "pure flavours" in Italy, but it can be a bit too pure sometimes 😉
