The Chinateatern in Stockholm is currently playing a new round of "Dreamgirls - The Musical", from 21 February to 16 March 2025. We experienced the musical last Friday, and it was an evening filled with speed and excitement.

Dreamgirls - The Musical at Chinateatern in Stockholm
'Dreamgirls - The Musical' is about three young black singers trying to make it big in the US in the 1960s, via the major record label Motown. The story alludes to real-life bands Supremes, of which Diana Ross was a member.
This Broadway musical premiered in Sweden last autumn, and this is the first time it has been performed outside the US and UK. It is now playing for another season, at the China Theatre in Stockholm.

A nice musical evening
We rarely go to musicals or theatre, but it's all the more fun when we do! It always feels a bit luxurious to hang out in the foyer waiting for the doors to open.

At the Chinese theatres you can have a glass of wine (or something else, of course), while you chat and watch the crowds.

What we thought of Dreamgirls - The Musical
Photography is not allowed during the musical - only during the applause - so you will have to make do with photos from this part of the performance.

But, what did we think? "Dreamgirls - The Musical" is a fast-paced show with entertaining dance and song numbers. Laila Adéle, who plays Effie White, has a marvellous voice and the other musical performers also put on great numbers.

Maybe we thought we would recognise more songs than we did ... Of course, it has to do with how musically versed you are, and somehow the songs also change when they are translated into Swedish. Regardless, it was a fast-paced, entertaining and very nice evening!

I have rarely seen musicals but I find it quite nice. You rarely get to take photos at any kind of performance. For better or worse.
Cosy with something to drink in the foyer before. Or in the break if available.
Happy Sunday!

It was almost a little nice that you didn't have to take pictures, because then you don't have to think about it ... 😉 But it's nice that you can take pictures in the applause thank you anyway!

Our family loves musicals and has collected them in Stockholm, Malmö, Gothenburg, London, New York, Salt Lake City and San Francisco. With toddler hormones, the surprise from the husband, Kristina from Duvemåla (I had listened to the music over and over again), was probably the biggest experience. I'm a musical girl and I cry and live in these numbers with everything I have. Les Miserables and Wicked are perhaps the favourites, but why not My Fair Lady (my first, as a teenager), Grease, Chess, School of Rock, Phantom of the Opera and all the others? The only one I was disappointed with was Cats, it was actually a bit too weird although Memory with Elaine Paige is one of my favourite numbers of all time. And Dear Evan Hansen I can't wait to see! Wow, that was a whole essay...

Helena says:
Wow, you really are a musical theatre veteran! So many musicals you have seen! I have also seen some, but not very many. Kristina from Duvemåla I have not seen, but like the music!

Ditte says:
I often go to the theatre and once a year there is also a musical. I have seen Dreamgirls and thought it was quite ok. A lot of speed and of course I recognised many of the songs. But the musical I liked best. From 2024 is Änglagård. Then with Tommy Körberg and Helen Sjöholm in the lead roles.
It was a pleasant evening for you in every way.

Helena says:
It's marvellous! I have heard good things about Änglagård, but unfortunately not seen.

Over the years, we have seen a lot of musicals and they are certainly wonderful experiences. In recent years, there have been fewer, partly because we think ticket prices have skyrocketed and we may then prioritise doing other things. We've seen many good shows, but I think Kristina från Duvemåla at the Gothenburg Opera in the 1990s is one of the best.
23 February 2025 - 10:02
Helena says:
Yes, of course you prioritise a bit ... I can imagine that Kristina from Duvemåla was an experience! Have not seen it, but like the music!

Yes, fun! Yes, maybe it does, but at the cinema, for example, you usually can't buy a glass of wine 😉

Nice with musicals. I am not completely experienced, been to Kristina from Duvemåla and then if it counts Mama Mia the party. Nice it is in any case.

What fun, we saw it a month ago.
Next week we're going to Tina-The show, I'm sure that will be good too. I think I recognise and know more songs that Tina has done.

No, musicals, operettas and operas are not my thing. But I'm glad you enjoyed the musical.

Mr Michael says:
I've never seen a musical live, only on TV and on TV it's not my thing at all, but I imagine it's probably different live.
Doubt I'll ever go to one though, but who knows?
Have a wonderful evening now, what is left. 🙂

Roses and ruins says:
Actually, I'm not that fond of musicals, I think there is something strange about singing the story... 😉 But the times I have seen it live, it is of course an experience, I remember The Phantom of the Opera with Peter Jöback, it was fantastic! So maybe it's mostly if it's on film that I'm not overjoyed, although Sound of music and Grease were lovely, and there are probably more, just can't think of them.
At least it's fun to go to the theatre, I like that!
