Wines from Italy's Piedmont - inspiration for a tantalising region

We've been tasting wines from Italy's Piedmont region and - most importantly - we've been curious to visit this region in north-west Italy. After an event this week, we've been gathering inspiration and information for our upcoming motorhome holidays in southern Europe.

Piedmont in Italy

Piedmont is a region in the north-west of Italy, bordering Switzerland and France. The capital is Turin, and the area includes eight provinces: Alessandria, Asti, Biella, Cuneo, Novara, Turin, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli.

The area is known for its fine wines, but also for truffles and beautiful scenery with dramatic mountains.

Piemonte on a visit to Stockholm

This week, a large delegation from Piedmont visited the Swedish capital. They ranged from local tourist agencies and tour operators to various wineries, and all had gathered at the Opera Terrace to showcase their offerings to journalists, travel agents and other relevant actors in Sweden.

Piedmont - wine, food, nature and history

The event started with a meeting with tourist agencies from different provinces of Piedmont, and we can admit that we were very curious about this area. We have been in the neighbourhood - in Milan and in Liguria - but we have never found our way to Piedmont. This spring and summer, however, we may get our chance - we will be travelling in France and Italy.

So, what does Piedmont have to offer? What attracts us is that it seems to be somewhat less touristy than some other areas in Italy, and that nature seems to be completely fantastic. In addition, wine, food attract, truffles, events and historic cities and buildings.

Tasting of wines from Piedmont

What about the wines? Piedmont is one of Italy's great wine regions, perhaps best known for the Barolo and Barbaresco areas, which produce famous red wines from nebbiolo. It also grows the blue grapes barbera and dolcetto, the green grape Muscat, and makes sparkling wine spumante.

As well as big name wine producers, there are lots of small family-run wineries, and several of these were in Stockholm this week. It was time to try and taste ...

After a while, there was also a guided wine tasting, where we learnt a bit more about the different wines. Interesting!

Italian flavours

The day ended with some Italian food at the Grodan restaurant at the Opera, including cheese, salami, risotto and Vitello tonnato (veal with tuna sauce).

Yes, visiting Italy and Piedmont was even more inspiring! If you're really lucky, you might even manage to catch a cheese festival, a truffle festival or a risotto festival ...

Have you visited Piedmont in Italy?

Now we wonder: Have you visited Piedmont in Italy? If so, do you have any tips for us for our upcoming motorhome holiday? If you haven't visited the region - are you curious?
