Hotels in Cairo - how to choose?

How should you go about choosing a hotel in Cairo? First of all, you have to decide whether you want to stay in Giza (close to the pyramids, but further to Down town) or in Down town (close to city life, but further to the pyramids).

Then it depends on what is important to you: Should it be child-friendly? Do you want a spa? Does it have to have many restaurants? Should it be affordable? Please note that stars are only indicative and usually say more about what is available (what service) than about the standard. It is also not certain that stars in Egypt match stars in Europe.

We recently visited Cairo as both travel writers and travel agents. We had the opportunity to check out six different hotels in Cairo, which we tell you about here!

Mövenpick Cairo Media City

1st Swiss Inn Pyramid Golf Resort (Giza)

  • Address: El Wahat Rd, First 6th of October, Giza Governorate
  • Stars: 5
  • For whom: For those who want peace and quiet, a relaxing pool and proximity to the pyramids.

When we visited Cairo we stayed at Swiss Inn Pyramid Golf Resort. This place is not nearly as golf-focused as you might think when you read the name, but there is a golf course nearby so those who want to can play.

Otherwise, the hotel is great for relaxing after intense pyramid visits. However, it is good to be aware that you live a bit "remote" here - you need a car if you want to get anywhere.

Our room was excellent with comfortable beds, air conditioning, good water/tea bag/coffee powder refills, working air conditioning and a acceptable water jet in the shower (you can't expect the same water jet as in Europe...).

Restaurants and services

There is also an a la carte restaurant, but we only ate in the buffet restaurant at this hotel. Buffet is not really our thing, but both breakfast and dinner were fresh and nicely presented and we found some favourites, including good fish. For those who like sweets, there are lots.

There is also a large heated swimming pool, and the atmosphere around the pool was really relaxed when we were here.

2. Mövenpick Cairo Media City (Giza)

  • Address: El Wahat Rd, First 6th of October, 6th of October City (3), Giza Governorate.
  • Stars: 5
  • For whom: Those who want a wide range of services and proximity to the pyramids, even for families with children.

Another hotel we checked out in Giza was Mövenpick Cairo Media City. We were taken on a guided tour here, and we have to say that this hotel looks really delicious.

The rooms, which come in a few different classes, also look very nice.

In addition, it is possible to book slightly larger accommodation, where you can fit a whole family. Several of these are on the ground floor, with close access to the pool area. Nice!

Restaurants and services

There's a wide range of restaurants to choose from, as well as a shopping area and a spa. There is simply a lot to do!

The pool area is fantastic, with both relaxing sunbeds and the possibility of active activities for children.

3. Hyatt Regency Cairo West (Giza)

  • Address: Business Park, Pyramids Heights, Km 22 Cairo - Alexandria Desert Rd, First 6th of October, Giza Governorate.
  • Stars: 5
  • For whom: Those who want a classic 5-star hotel with style, close to the pyramids. Also good for conference guests.

In another part of Giza, even closer to the pyramids, are Hyatt Regency Cairo West. This is a classic and stylish hotel, for those who want impeccably high standards.

We were allowed to look into some hotel rooms and these looked very nice. Of course, there are a few different classes, and the bathtub is found in one of the higher classes.

Restaurants and services

There are several restaurants and cafés on site, as well as swimming pools.

In addition, there is a large and very nice spa with different types of treatments and treatment rooms.

4. Hyatt Centric Cairo West (Giza)

  • Address: Business Park, Pyramids Heights, Km 22 Cairo - Alexandria Desert Rd, First 6th of October, Giza Governorate.
  • Stars: 5
  • For whom: Those who want a 5-star hotel decorated with design and art, close to the pyramids.

The hotel Hyatt Centric Cairo West is located right next to the sister hotel Hyatt Regency Cairo West. Geographical location and price point are about the same. The experience is completely different, at least if you like modern design and art. Wow, what a cool place!

The rooms are stylish and modern, and each room is decorated in its own unique way. There are plenty of paintings on the walls and orange is a recurring accent colour.

Restaurants and services

There are a variety of restaurants and bars in the hotel, and a recurring common denominator is art.

The same is true when you come out to the lovely swimming pool. Here you can sunbathe and swim in peace and quiet, while enjoying a number of modern works of art.

If you book a suite, you get a private pool included in the suite. But even those who share a pool have a good time... How about a game of billiards in the pool, for example?

5. Cosmopolitan hotel (Down town)

  • Address: Bin-Taalab Street from Kasr al Nile Street next to Egyptian stock market, Down Town, Cairo.
  • Stars: 3
  • For whom: Those who want to stay in the centre of Cairo city, to be able to walk to different restaurants, and who don't mind a spa or pool.

Cosmopolitan hotel is a classic and traditional hotel in the centre of Cairo, Down Town. The advantage of this hotel is the lovely historic setting and great location. The downside might be if you want more modern decor or services in the form of a pool and spa. Many Italians like this hotel, according to the local travel agent we spoke to!

We also liked the atmosphere, we must say, and not least the historic and beautiful lift. The room we looked into looked very nice, albeit not too big.

Restaurants and services

We had lunch at the Cosmopolitan hotel, and it was a pleasant experience. As well as the setting being delicious, we were served very good food. After an initial (tasty!) lentil soup, we had chicken with fries, rice and vegetables. It all ended with some sweet and savoury pastries.

6. Intercontinental Cairo Semiramis (Down town)

  • Address: Nile Corniche, Qasr Ad Dobarah, Qasr El Nil, Cairo Governorate.
  • Stars: 5
  • For whom: Those who want to stay in the centre of Cairo city, overlooking the Nile, with a good choice of restaurants, spas and more.

The hotel Intercontinental Cairo Semiramis has an incredible location right in the centre of Cairo. Many of the hotel's windows offer spectacular views of the Nile. In addition, the hotel offers every conceivable service you could possibly ask for.

The rooms are nice, and several of them have views of the Nile.

Restaurants and services

There are several restaurants and cafés to choose from, and in many places you can sit so that you have a view of the Nile.

There is also a spa, where you can choose from a variety of treatments, and an outdoor swimming pool.

More to see and do in Cairo

Of course, there are also many other things to see and do in Cairo. In the first place, you don't want to miss the pyramids of Giza and the historical museums in Cairo! In addition, you can visit the beautiful Mohammad Ali Mosque, discover hand-knotted carpets or perhaps take a dinner cruise on the Nile.
