Restaurants in Åland
We have visited Åland several times. There have been a number of different cruises, and in the summer of 2023 we also travelled around the islands with our motorhome for two weeks. This independent island kingdom impresses with both locally produced specialities and really good eateries. In total, we can recommend 8 nice restaurants in Åland.
1st Compagniet at Arkipelag, Mariehamn
One of the times we were in Mariehamn we had dinner at the Compagniet restaurant in the Arkipelag hotel. We really liked the environment here! It feels like travelling to India at the turn of the 1800/1900s. Be prepared for soft carpets and pictures of tigers, along with pool tables and shuffleboards.

We had really good food here and the starters in particular stood out: gravad rödig and råraka with sikrom. Yum we just say!

2nd Q, Degersands Resort, Eckerö
When was the last time you visited a camping restaurant that stood out because of the food? It doesn't happen too often, but restaurant Q, at Degersand Resort in Eckerö, definitely offers an experience beyond the ordinary.

The food is not only well prepared, creative and tasty, but also beautiful to look at. Here we each ate a fantastically good starter - Degersand scrambled eggs on black bread and Västerbotten pie with whitefish roe. Then it was moules frites for the main course. Oh so good!

3. Åland Distillery
In northern Åland, right next to Kastelholm Castle and the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum, is the Åland Distillery. The distillery produces gin and various long drinks, and there is also a cosy restaurant.

On our visit, we had soup with pike and root vegetables and pizza with various cheeses. Both dishes tasted very good!

4. Lolo's Seaside, Geta
Geta is the northernmost municipality in mainland Åland, and here you'll find Lolo's Seaside Café & Restaurant. This charming and relaxed place offers a fantastic seaside setting.

At this personally cosy restaurant you can expect food with Ålandic, Nordic and Asian touches. The name "Lolo" means grandfather in Filipino and was chosen to honour the female owner's grandfather. Don't miss out on buying local jams and apple juice from the family business Snäckö frukt!

5. Kallas SkärGård, Sandö, Vårdö
One of the best dining experiences we had in Åland was at Kallas SkärGård on Sandö in Vårdö, in Åland's eastern archipelago. In addition to the food being good, the setting is fantastic with a large lovely garden and a beautifully decorated main building.

We chose to eat the "fish of the day" here, which was served with a deliciously flavoursome mix of local vegetables. Enjoyable! If you don't make it to Vårdö, there is a sister restaurant in Mariehamn, called Kallas Stadskrog.

6. Seagrams, Degerhamn, Föglö
If you visit the island Föglö we highly recommend a visit to Seagrams restaurant in Degerby. This restaurant has a fantastic location by the water and a large lovely outdoor terrace.

When we were here, we chose baked Åland cod with deep-fried seaweed and beef fillet with cream-stewed black roots. Both dishes tasted very good, and the rhubarb crumble was the perfect finishing touch.

7. Carlsro bath hotel, Föglö
Another place to visit on Föglö is Carlsro Badhotell. Here you can enjoy an incredibly stylish interior, where everything alludes to the turn of the century 1800/1900 and where not a single detail has been neglected. Don't miss the charming little retro shop in the entrance and treat yourself to a wonderful spa experience!

We have "only" had breakfast in the restaurant, but it is the best breakfast we have ever had. Every ingredient is well thought out and almost everything comes from local producers. Of course, you can also choose to have dinner in the restaurant, for example in the form of Danish sandwiches.

8. Brudhäll, Kökar
Last but not least, we must recommend Brudhäll, located on the beautiful island of Kökar. This place is run as a hotel, restaurant and guest harbour, and is incredibly beautiful right on the water. There is also a delicious two-storey sauna here!

On our visit we started with marinated prawns, and then continued with perch and potatoes. The view and the service were actually more impressive than the food, but we had a nice evening.

More restaurants in Åland?
There are of course many other good restaurants in Åland. For example, Smakbyn, located at Kastelholm Castle, is famous. If you like food, we can also recommend trying various local specialities, such as marmalades, honey, mustard, beer and apple juice.

I will probably miss these, far for Gothenburgers. I last cycled in Åland in 1968, but have read Ålandic authors. During that trip with my father, he thought a Roma woman should read my fortune, I was sixteen and Finnish.
She said that I will meet a black foreign man, have four children, live in a house and be quite happy. It was true!!! Except that the Swedish man was/is blond 🙂

But so exciting with the fortune teller! I don't really believe in that kind of thing, but if I were to be part of it, and it would feel so right, then I would certainly feel differently 😉

I am so happy when you emphasise Åland as a food destination. The Ålanders are good at food that they prepare from good ingredients. says a former Ålander, who is always an Ålander in heart and soul. Thank you very much!

You can take an Ålander out of Åland, but you can't take Åland out of an Ålander ... or was it? 😉 Glad you appreciate our reports!

Fun post! And Åland has many good restaurants both in Mariehamn and on the islands. Have tried most of the ones you have.
Can also strike a blow for the restaurant at Eckerö hotel. Very good food but slow service. Here, as in many places on Åland, it is difficult to get staff. According to the restaurant owners on the island, the staff issue is tricky. "You prefer to have qualified staff.
Kökar is so beautiful so we have appreciated a trip there with a few nights stay and good food. The same goes for the islands in the Åland archipelago.
We have also tried to stay and eat at Havsvidden, northern Åland and thought it was also very good. Maybe too expensive, but very nice.

I guess Karin, who has had a café in Geta, will recognise at least some of the places. The food you show makes me drool, as usual when I see food that is a delight to the eye: -)
