What is it like to visit High Coast Whisky on the High Coast? This Swedish whisky distillery is interesting in many ways, and it's also a nice place to visit. You can take a guided tour, taste the whisky, eat in the restaurant and perhaps stay overnight, either on the site or in a glamping tent.

High Coast Whisky
High Coast Whisky is produced at the High Coast Distillery in Bjärtrå, right next to the Ångerman River, in the High Coast. Here you will find, among other things, whisky that in 2025 was awarded as the best in the world, in the category "World's Best Single Cask Single Malt". That alone can make you want to make a visit!

High Coast Whisky is located in Bjärtrå, on the High Coast. By car, it takes about 40 minutes from Sollefteå and just under an hour from Härnösand.
The story of High Coast Whisky
There was once a wood-fired power station on the site. When this had long since fallen into disuse, artists found their way here, and only then did the idea arise: "Why not make whisky here?"
The whisky company started in 2007 and the copper boilers arrived in 2010. In 2013 the first whisky arrived and in 2020 the 20 000th cask was filled. The story of High Coast Whisky, first called Box Whisky, is not very long, but it is impressive nonetheless!

Guided tour at High Coast Whisky
One of the things you can do at High Coast Whisky is to join a guided tour. Right now, in low season, the tours are given once a week, on Saturdays. In high season, tours are given daily.

The guided tour takes you "behind the scenes", where you can learn more about the manufacturing process. Interesting!

Whisky in long lines
Do you like whisky? Then you've found the right place! At High Coast Whisky, the casks are lined up in a row, and anyone who wants to can order their own cask. Walking along the long rows, you'll see lots of signs with personalised names - everything from Svensson and Karlsson to names that sound Chinese.

In the restaurant you can see examples of the whiskies produced over the years.

Right now, High Coast Whisky is particularly proud of the whisky that won the award as the best in the world in the World Whiskies Awards 2025. This is how the winning drink is described:
Quite meaty on the nose, with hints of barbecue sauce. Layered flavour on the palate: smoke, bacon, some fruit, and herbs. The smoky finish gently fades.

Restaurant 63°N
If you want to eat, there is a restaurant with a beautiful location, overlooking the Ångermanälven. When we were here, the sun attracted many to sit outside, even though it was only the end of March.

If you prefer to sit indoors, you can enjoy the view through the large, cosy windows. The menu offers things like seared salmon and venison steak. Of course, there are some interesting drinks too.

If you look upwards, you can see a chandelier made of upside-down glass ...

Parking space for motorhomes
If you come with a motorhome or caravan, there are pitches with electricity, which can be booked via the website. You can also book a place for a regular tent, and in the summer it is also possible to book a night in a glamping tent overlooking the Ångerman River. Then there will be Glamping High Coast here with its nice, cosy and comfortable glamping tents.

An empty whisky cask was taken home
Before we left, we actually did a bit of shopping... High Coast Whisky was selling off old whisky casks and we knew that Peter's son Robin and his wife Alexandra were looking for one for the garden of their new house.

We rang them on Whats App, filmed and asked ... is this what you want? The answer was "yes!!!" so then we went shopping for a barrel and loaded it into the motorhome...

More to see and do in the neighbourhood
Not far from High Coast Whisky you will find Glamping High Coast, where you can experience a peaceful night in a glamping tent. You also won't want to miss visiting Mannaminne in Nordingrå and Mount Skule. You can find even more tips at things to see and do in the High Coast here.

That would be a place for Maken. I hear their whisky is good.
I wouldn't mind having an empty whiskey barrel.

Yes, good whisky! And yes, the whisky barrel turned out great in Peter's son's garden! 🙂

We had thoughts of High Coast Whisky when we travelled north last year but we were at the High Coast Bridge just the day before Midsummer's Eve so there was no visit. It looks like a nice tour. Do you need to book it in advance?
I guess we'll have to plan for that next time we go north.

I guess it depends on whether the tour can be fully booked or not. I.e. it is certainly possible to book on site, but you are more certain if you book in advance on their website.

A successful visit, I can understand. And coming here is always nice - I have visited High Coast Whisky several times over the years when I was travelling. Very nice and located in such a nice environment. Very fun to be guided around, get to taste and know "everything". Good food and nice service did its part.
It's nice to come back through you.

Never heard of High Coast Whisky. Knew about Mackmyra and at first thought it was the same company, but it was not.
It's great that they won the prize. Imagine, a distillery in northern Sweden competing with Scottish and American distilleries. Incredible really:-)
The old whisky barrel could easily have been placed on my balcony as a "side table" to the deck chair.
