Kalmar County Museum offers a very exciting exhibition on the regal ship Kronan, which sank in the Baltic Sea in 1676. There are also some other interesting exhibitions here - including one on the mysterious massacre at the ancient Sandby Borg castle on Öland.

Kalmar Castle is an imposing structure that feels both historic and fairytale-like as it stands on the waterfront with its walls and towers. Perhaps it's not surprising that the castle's website promotes it as 'a real castle'.

Did you know that there are around 15-20 ancient castles on Öland? The castles are now ruins, and the findings tell stories about everyday life in the Iron Age, wealth, journeys to Eastern Europe, and untimely death. One of the castles, Eketorp Castle, has been rebuilt so you can see what life was once like.

Öland Museum Himmelsberga is a nice open-air museum that shows an old-fashioned Öland row village and what life was like in the past. There is also a cosy little café, a shop and an art gallery.

Solliden Palace on Öland is the royal family's summer paradise. Although the villa is private, most of the beautiful garden is open to the public. Here you can stroll through beautifully landscaped parks, and perhaps have a coffee at Kaffetorpet.

Borgholm Castle is sometimes called "the most beautiful ruin in the Nordic region" and is indeed a mighty castle ruin. As well as being impressively large, the castle has a fantastic view of the sea. Borgholm Castle simply must be seen!

Kustvägen Byrum - Äleklinta runs along the beautiful west coast of Öland. We started in Byxelkrok in the morning and then drove slowly south, along cliffs, sandy beaches and rauks. A fantastically beautiful road!

Böda Sand Camping on Öland is not only Sweden's largest campsite but also known from the TV reality series Böda Camping. Located along a two-mile long white sandy beach, the campsite is like a small village of its own with shops, restaurants, entertainment and activities.

A 2D café, what is it? We didn't know either until we visited one. But if we are to recommend a single place on Öland, it might be this one. Don't miss 2D Café Kex at Mellböda gård, on northern Öland! Here you can experience art, games, kite flying and delicious pastries.
