Ångermanland is a landscape in Norrland, where you will find the area and the UNESCO heritage site High coast. The landscape is bordered to the south by Medelpad, in the west to Jämtland, in the north to Lapland and Västerbotten and in the east to the Bothnian Sea.

1. Fascinated by the High Coast Bridge

The High Coast Bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe, with an impressive structure spanning the Ångermanälven river at 1,867 metres. There's a lookout on the north side of Hornöberget that's absolutely stunning where you can see the bridge alongside, and it's a great selfie spot.

Construction of the High Coast Bridge began in 1993 and opened in 1997. With an impressive height of 180 metres above water, the construction of the High Coast Bridge is designed to withstand the strong winds and harsh climate of the area. You can't help but be mesmerised by the engineering and beautiful workmanship.

2. Camping in the High Coast

Many campsites are beautifully located in the High Coast World Heritage Site and almost all have cottages with the sea next to them. Camp by nature and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Here are some suggestions for camping near the beach that you can do in Ångermanland.

3. Fishing in the river ångermanälven in Solefteå.

Sollefteå offers great opportunities for angling in the Ångeman River and in the centre of town. The town is surrounded by beautiful lakes, flowing rivers and picturesque streams. Here, fishermen can enjoy catching various fish species, including trout, salmon, pike-perch and pike. Sollefteå is a dream destination for fishing enthusiasts seeking exciting challenges and a scenic waterfront experience.

4. Take a selfie at the pulpit on Getsvedje mountain

The pulpit is probably the High Coast's best photo spot and gives that little extra in a photo. You also have a wonderful hike up the mountain Getsvedjeberget that starts at Skuleberget havscamping. Bring water and good shoes and get going because you don't want to miss this.

5. Walk the world-famous High Coast Trail

The High Coast Trail is a spectacular hiking trail that runs along the dramatic coastline of the High Coast. Spanning approximately 128 kilometres, the trail takes hikers through a variety of terrain, including forests, cliffs and beaches. The views along the trail are breathtaking, with panoramic views of the sea and surrounding mountains. The High Coast Trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the magnificent nature and cultural heritage of the area up close.

6. Get to the cool slåttdalsskrevan area

Slåttdalsskrevan is an approximately 200 metres long, 30 metres deep and seven metres wide crevice that splits Slåttdalsberget, in the High Coast, into two parts. It's a nice hike from Entré south by a 3.1 km single track and we recommend going up to Slottdalsberget with a magical view. Bring water, good shoes and something to eat. From 1 June 2023 you are not allowed to walk in Slåttdalsskrevan because you cannot guarantee safety from falling rocks. You can take photos from both short sides.

7. Hiking in Skuleskogen National Park

Skuleskogen National Park offers a wide range of hiking trails for visitors to explore. Popular trails include the Skuleberget Nature Trail, which takes you up the mountain with great views. The park is also known for its biodiversity. There is a wealth of wildlife, including wild animals such as forest deer, elk, wolverine and lynx. There are also various plant species, including orchids, coniferous forests and meadows.

8. Take a boat trip to Ulvön.

Ulvön is a gem of the High Coast with its unique atmosphere and charming fishing village. The island is surrounded by a beautiful archipelago and offers fantastic opportunities for fishing and boating. Walk along Ulvö harbour called hamngatan and experience all the fishing sheds and beautiful surroundings. Check out Ulvö Chapel which is Norrland's oldest wooden building from 1622 where both walls and ceilings have beautiful paintings. Go up to Lotsberget and take a selfie with one of the most beautiful views in the High Coast and don't forget Ulvön Museum. The boats depart from Docksta, Ullånger and Köpmanholmen.

9. Come to Trysunda, one of Sweden's most beautiful islands.

Trysunda, voted Sweden's most beautiful island. Stroll around a picturesque fishing harbour that is very well preserved. Walk the cultural trail and see the colourful fishing huts along the coast. It's a perfect place to take beautiful photos and feel the genuine coastal culture. Take a trip to the beautiful lighthouse, sunbathe and swim at the fine sandy beach, visit the chapel with beautiful paintings, or have an ice cream at Trysunda archipelago café.

10. Live in a lighthouse on the High Farm in the High Coast Archipelago

Högbonden lighthouse & hostel is located high on the coast and can be reached by the boat Ronja from Barsta and Bönhamn. Högbonden is best known for its lighthouse but there is more on the island such as two marked nature trails and two caves. Spend the night at the hostel and enjoy the silence.

11. Picking cloudberries on marshes in Ångermanland.

Cloudberries usually thrive in moist and acidic soils such as bogs and marshes. Explore areas in Ångermanland where cloudberries are known to grow. Ask locals or the tourist office for tips and recommendations for good cloudberry sites. Pick cloudberries when they are ripe and the berries have turned a yellow-orange colour. The optimal time for cloudberry picking in Ångermanland is usually between July and August.

12. Discover Mjältön, Sweden's highest island.

Mjältön is 236 metres high, the highest in the country. There is a beautiful nature reserve on the island with the Mjältö Cave which measures 105 metres in height! Mjältön is also a popular place for boaters who are mainly looking for a place to stay for the night and swim at Baggviken. The Baggviken lagoon has a sauna, jetties, toilets, good camping facilities and nice fireplaces. 

13. Visit Hemsö Fortress

Hemsö Fortress in Sweden rises majestically above the Baltic Sea, with its impressive stone wall and towers testifying to the country's historic defence. 14. Homestay in Örnsköldsvik

Here you will also find Fjällräven outlet, Sweden's largest outdoor store. Örnsköldsvik is located in the High Coast area, which is a world heritage site known for its beautiful coastline and impressive nature. Örnsköldsvik offers a variety of outdoor activities all year round. Hike in beautiful forests, fish in the many lakes, canoe on the rivers or hit the ski slopes in the winter. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and outdoor life in the area.

15. Treat yourself to a sauna and hot tub at Norrfällsvikens camping.

Norrfällsvikens camping has 4 nature reserves around it and has the luxury of having one next to the sauna. Sit in the sauna with a starry sky or lie in the wood-fired hot tub by the sea. You buy wood at reception and just be one with nature. Pretty neat!

16. Walk around beautiful Bönhamn and Barsta.

A lovely day trip can be made by starting from idyllic Bönhamn and walking to Farsta, which takes just over an hour, and having an ice cream or lunch at Skutskepparn. From Barsta, head out to the Rotsidan nature reserve, which is a 4-kilometre-long coastal walk of polished rock slopes and pebble fields in hollows, and enjoy nature. The trail that runs in Rotsidan is also a stage of the World Heritage Trail.

17. Try surströmming when you are in Ångermanland.

Opinions are divided on whether to try surströmming, but if you're going to try it, it's in the High Coast to get the right environment. Surströmming grew in the 16th century in Sweden when there was a salt shortage due to war. We used very little salt, but to survive the winter we fermented the fish, which was later preserved for a longer shelf life.

18. Buy Mjällom's thin bread from 1923

Mjälloms tunnbröd is a well-known product from Mjällomslandet in Västernorrland, Sweden, and will be 100 years old in 2023. This traditional tunnbröd is made according to old recipes and traditions, using ingredients such as rye flour, wheat flour, water and yeast. The shop is like a farm shop and must be experienced. It is a beloved part of Swedish food culture and a taste experience that many people appreciate.

19. Strolling in the old town of Härnösand

The Old Town of Härnösand is a historic and charming part of the city that offers a unique atmosphere and well-preserved architecture. 20. Have fun at Mannaminne in Nordingrå

Mannaminne is an art and culture project founded by Sven-Åke Svensson. It is located in Nordingrå, in the High Coast area of Sweden. Mannaminne consists of over 60 buildings and structures representing different cultures and time periods around the world. It includes traditional huts, churches, pagodas, tents and sculptures, among others. Mannaminne is more than just a museum - it is a vibrant place where cultural events, art exhibitions, musical performances and festivals regularly take place. It is a unique destination for those interested in art, culture and history.

21. step into the old village where the children from frostmountain were filmed.

Gammelgården in Myckelgensjö is a 17th century farmhouse with 28 houses in their original condition, and one of the best preserved in Sweden. It is very cosy to walk around here but in the summer you also get to go into the houses that we did not get in the spring. Gammelbyn is beautifully situated with the entire lake in front of the courtyard. Don't forget to stop

22. Travel back in time on Häxberget.

Häxberget or bålberget is a horrible place that leaves a bad taste in the mouth but should be experienced so we don't do the same thing again. The witch hunt where the belief was derailed in 1675 and where men judged people and took their lives by beheading and burning at the stake. In total there were 71 people, 65 women, 2 men and 4 boys. The stone reads, "Here burned witch burning in 1675 - Women died, men condemned - the faith of the time affects mankind".

23. Learn more about the rock carvings in Nämforsen.

Here is the Nämforsen Rock Carving Museum, which you should visit when you are there. Hällristningarna i Nämforsen is an impressive collection of rock carvings located on the Ångermanälven river in Västernorrland, Sweden. This site is one of the largest and most well-preserved collections of rock carvings in the Nordic region, covering an area of several square kilometres with over 2500 rock carvings. The rock carvings in Nämforsen show different motifs and symbols that give us a glimpse into the past and tell stories about the life and culture of people thousands of years ago.

24. Dancing through the night at the Urkult festival

Urkultsfestivalen is an annual music and culture festival that takes place in Näsåker in Ångermanland, Sweden. The festival attracts visitors from near and far to experience a unique atmosphere and a wide range of music, art, workshops and sustainability activities. 25. Experience an evening at the High Coast Nature Centre.

26. Check out the sourdough museum in Skeppsmalen.

The Surströmming Museum is a unique museum located in Skeppsmalen, near Örnsköldsvik in Sweden. The museum is dedicated to the traditional Swedish delicacy surströmming, which is fermented herring eaten with accompaniments such as thin bread, onions and sour cream. Visitors to the Surströmming Museum can learn about the history, production process and culture of surströmming through interactive exhibitions, tastings and guided tours.

27. Take part in the choirboy at Skagsudde.

The choirboy, named after Korviken by the lighthouse at Skeppsmalen. Here the fishermen sat on the rocks and discussed the weather and wind, and for good fishing luck they put a coin under him in a slot. It was probably the Gävle fishermen in the 17th century who started with a lucky man.

28. Get inspired by Ting 1 in Övik, Sweden.

Ting 1 is a modern and well-known building located in the centre of Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, designed by Gert Wingårdh and completed in 2013. The building has become a symbol of Örnsköldsvik and houses various functions, including shops, restaurants, offices and apartments.

29. Petting moose in the Moose House in Bjurholm.

The Moose House is actually Sweden and Europe's first moose park with domesticated moose and moose calves. Admission also includes the moose museum, visiting the moose, and a fantastic slide show. Cuddling with moose, well then it's time for a visit.

30. Watch an ice hockey game in the Hägglunds arena

If you are interested in ice hockey, you can experience the excitement at the old Fjällräven Centre, now Hägglunds Arena, home of Modo Hockey. Bring your family or friends and cheer on the team during a game or explore the hockey museum to learn more about the history of the sport. Think Peter Forsberg, the Sedin brothers, Anders Hedberg, Victor Hedman, Markus Näslund and now you know why you should visit Hägglunds Arena at least once in your life.

31. Take a cruise on the river Ångermanälven with the boat M/S Ådalen III.

32. Take a trip to the Murberget Open Air Museum.

46. View the Springkas viewing tower and the whole of Härnösand.

Go to the top of the mountain and climb the lookout tower of the spring barracks. Have a coffee or buy an ice cream if you don't have your own picnic with you. The view of Härnösand is incredible and if it's winter, you have the lift that takes you up for skiing.

I can only imagine that the stars are so jealous that they want to join the party too, but they can only be spectators. The Northern Lights are truly a spectacular show that rocks the earth and the universe!

53. Enjoy the inside of Härnösand Cathedral

Härnösand Cathedral, located in Härnösand, is an impressive church building dating back to the 17th century. The cathedral is known for its beautiful neoclassical architecture and the magnificent copper-clad dome that is a well-known symbol of Härnösand.

54. Walk to the top of Skuleberget

We started at Skuleberget's sea campsite which is a 20 minute walk from the naturum, which is a sort of starting point on how to get up the mountain. There are several different options and when we were there in early spring, the lift was closed to the top, so we will go up. You can take the Höga Kusten-stigen / Södra Bergsstigen, Linbanestigen, Grottstigen (steep) or Östra Bergsstigen. We took the southern path which felt like a non-active exercise freak or youth. Very nice hike to the top! If you just want to get to the top and eat pancakes or have a cup of coffee in the sun, take the cable car.

  • The High Coast Bridge was built in 1997. It is 1,800 metres long and the two towers on which the bridge deck hangs are 180 metres high, 25 metres higher than the Kaknästornet tower in Stockholm, previously Sweden's tallest building.
  • Paradiset (Paradisbadet) in Örnsköldsvik is one of Sweden's largest water parks, with almost half a million visitors annually. It includes Sweden's longest water slide.
  • Nämforsen has one of the world's largest collections of rock carvings, many of which depict moose.
  • Själevad church, which has been named Sweden's most beautiful church.
  • Sollefteå museum on Storgatan 59, rafting on the Ångermanälven river, Härnö gin has won two years in a row with the world's best gin and go on a guided tour. Härnösand car museum with 200 cars between 1899 - 1990,
  • Famous people: Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, ice hockey player Peter "Foppa" Forsberg, skier Magdalena Forsberg (ullånger), musicians Titti Sjöblom and Ehrling Eliasson, Scicross skier Sandra Näslund, director Andreas Öhman,  
  • Unnecessary knowledge: Ångermanland takes its name from the word angerwhich means "deep bay", and there are many deep bays along the coasts of Ångermanland. The post-glacial coastline was 250 metres above the current one in Skuleberget. Skuleberget is also the place on earth that still rises the most after the ice age, 1 cm per year.
