The last night on the island of La Maddalena, it was free camping in Sardinia. The main reason was financial. (We have budgeted 20 euros/night during our Euopa trip and now that we are approaching the high season, most campsites cost more.) Once we stood there, watching the sun sink into the horizon from our door, we realised that there are so many more reasons to free camp!

Yesterday, as we drove south in Sardinia, we felt a bit cheated. Firstly, we did not get out to the beaches at Emerald Coast with our motorhome and secondly, it felt like we left the charming small roads and deserted nature of Corsica behind us. Here in Sardinia, the roads are bigger, the people are more numerous, the cars drive faster... Well, we finally arrived at Cala Gonone, which is really nice!
Read moreFirst, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who sent me congratulations yesterday! I really got lots of nice greetings on the blog, Facebook, Instagram and email. I have read all of them several times and it really warms me up! My wonderful colleagues had also recorded a video where they sang for me - but how nice is that?
Read moreNow we have arrived in the nice town of Alghero. But the day started by driving to the far end of the Stintino peninsula in north-west Sardinia. There should be many beautiful beaches ... and there probably are. But here in July, it is BOTH difficult to find space on the beach AND difficult to find space to park the motorhome. After being driven away from a car park (don't know why - we were standing inside the parking space?) we gave up and rolled further south.
Read moreThe caves of Neptune, or Grotta di Nettuno as they are called in Italian, are located outside Alghero in Sardinia. Neptune's caves were discovered by fishermen in the 19th century and the cave system is one of the most famous on the island. A lovely boat trip took us there and it was very convenient in the summer heat. Come to the Neptune Caves in Sardinia!
Read moreNow we have found a favourite place in Sardinia where we feel comfortable! As soon as we rolled in yesterday we felt that "Here we stay for a while!". We started in Alghero on the west coast yesterday afternoon and drove south - on nice winding roads along the coast.
Read moreThe day before yesterday we left Bosa and started driving south along the west coast of Sardinia. Today we have reached the small village of Portixeddu, just north of Buggerru. The roads are winding - sometimes along the coast and sometimes high up in the mountains. We have driven past fields, beaches, high mountains and industrial areas, and sometimes straight through small charming villages (where the motorhome barely fits on the roads).
Read moreThe advantage of a motorhome is that you are not restricted to charter destinations or places where there are hotels. Today, we started the journey south from Buggerru, travelling on breathtakingly beautiful roads through the mountains, with many impressive views of the sea.
Read moreYesterday we saw a whole bunch of people picking vongole mussels (or whatever these mussels are called?) here in Sardinia, and then we also got the urge to try it! On the small headland where we are standing (Punta S'Aliga, south of Portovesme) there is an outer beach, which is nice to swim in, and an inner beach, with stagnant shallow water filled with seaweed - this is apparently where the mussels thrive.
Read moreIt is wonderful to fricamp in Sardinia! It's now five days since we filled and emptied the tanks in the car and charged electricity from a pole. The water in the tank is probably almost gone, the electricity in the car is ticking down and the car is full of things that need to be emptied: rubbish, waste water, toilet. Nevertheless, we decide to hitchhike one more night!
