Food shops and food culture in Southern Europe

Shopping in supermarkets in Southern Europe (and everywhere else!) is exciting and interesting. It is fun to browse through all the raw materials and products that you are not used to from Sweden. It's also interesting to observe the range of products in the shops as it tells you a lot about the food culture in the different countries. We have now travelled in France, Portugal, Spain and Italy for eight months. Here you can see our reflections from the supermarkets. Maybe you have other experiences?

San Vito Lo Capo promontory - beautiful nature in Sicily

San Vito Lo Capo is located on a prominent promontory in western Sicily, just north of Trapani. It offers beautiful scenery in the form of dramatic mountains and fine beaches. The village is small but charming and the 'main' street is full of restaurants, bars, shops and strolling tourists.

Antipasti - and eating in the heat

We're not as impressed with Italian food as many people seem to be (seriously, pizza and pasta are mostly ... dough?), but there are some things they do really well. Things like olives, tomatoes and air-dried ham taste amazing here, and all these goodies are suitable for eating as 'antipasti'.

Picking vongole mussels

Yesterday we saw a whole bunch of people picking vongole mussels (or whatever these mussels are called?) here in Sardinia, and then we also got the urge to try it! On the small headland where we are standing (Punta S'Aliga, south of Portovesme) there is an outer beach, which is nice to swim in, and an inner beach, with stagnant shallow water filled with seaweed - this is apparently where the mussels thrive.

At home: In a village in Sardinia

You may remember that we had a nice evening with our British and German table neighbours at the restaurant the other night? They ended up inviting us to their village in Sardinia, and of course we didn't hesitate to accept such a nice invitation! In the middle of the day yesterday we packed up the motorhome and drove to Scano di Montiferro, not far from Bosa. Wow, what an experience!

40th anniversary celebrations in Sardinia

First, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who sent me congratulations yesterday! I really got lots of nice greetings on the blog, Facebook, Instagram and email. I have read all of them several times and it really warms me up! My wonderful colleagues had also recorded a video where they sang for me - but how nice is that?

St Florent in Corsica - a Corsican St Tropez

Now we have arrived in the small town of St Florent in Corsica. "Oh, I want to live here!", I exclaimed when we arrived. Of course I don't, but the spontaneous feeling still gives it a good rating. The guidebook says that St Florent is "almost like a Corsican St Tropez". This is true to an extent - it feels affluent, the outdoor cafes are close to the harbour and there are a lot of luxury yachts. Still, I like this place much more than St Tropez!

Seats in France - experience France's little Venice

Welcome to Sete in France! Sete is located on a narrow spit of land on the French Mediterranean coast, just south of Montpellier. Full of canals, boats and outdoor cafés, this harbour town is almost like a little Venice.

Right now we are hanging out in the motorhome and having a good time. We've been doing two training sessions a day for a few days, so today was a rest! It's raining outside, so we have spent time cleaning, even more travel planning and reading. And of course, you have to cook good food!

In French supermarkets - an experience

Yesterday we went shopping in Agde. It is really fun to go to French supermarkets, which are packed with delicacies and different products than what we are used to in Sweden. However, it is quite expensive, at least compared to Spain and Portugal. Join us for a little tour of the huge Hyper U supermarket!
